On Saturday, September 6, 1986, at 9:17AM, some foreign terrorists armed with hand grenades and machineguns attacked our coreligionists during their Shabbat prayers in Neve Shalom Synagogue. During the terror attack where 22 people lost their lives in a matter of minutes, the terrorists had also died due to the bombs exploding in their hands.
Miraculously, Jak Samrano, Gabi Saul, Yusuf Levi, Eliya Dana and Moiz Bitiren were able to survive. Those who lost their lives in the attack were buried in a memorial area in the Ashkenazi Cemetery in Ulus following a funeral ceremony held in Neve Shalom on Wednesday, September 10, 1986.
The synagogue was restored within a short period of time and reopened to service with an emotional ceremony attended by a big crowd and high officials on Wednesday, May 20, 1987. The bullet and bomb traces on the marble on the upper left corner of the Ehal were not repaired and left there to remember that day of sorrow.

On Saturday, November 15, 2003, another malicious attack during Shabbat prayers. That morning, two truck bombs were detonated, one in front of the Beth Israel Synagogue in Şişli and another in front of the Neve Shalom Synagogue at 9:14 am.
The synagogues were not highly damaged due to security measures taken after the terrorist attack in 1986. However, it inflicted a great damage to the surrounding buildings, members of the community and shopkeepers who were in the neighboring streets. 18 people lost their lives and a large number of people were injured.
A pit of three meters in diameter and two meters deep formed at the site of the explosion.
